Robert Bowker
received his bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Masters degree in voice from Northwestern University. While a student, he performed with the Chicago Symphony Chorus under Margaret Hillis, and was a soloist in numerous Grant Park concerts in Chicago. After two years of teaching, he became a full time freelance singer and vocal contractor in recording studios.

He has recorded thousands of commercials along with albums, industrials, and films. Currently he can be heard as a member of the “Schwartzman Quartet”, featured on television in “Jack’s Big Music Show”.

In 1990, he began a twelve-year annual participation in the Carnegie Hall Choral Workshops, and performed thirteen concerts under the late Robert Shaw, as well as concerts under James Conlon, Andre Previn and Helmut Rilling. He was a member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers and appeared as soloist with that ensemble in 1998.

Along with Dr. Ron Combs, in 1995 he co-authored Learning to Sing Nonclassical Music, published by Prentice Hall.

In 1999, he became the founding artistic director of the Lakeside Singers, a unique mix of twenty-five professional singers with widely varied backgrounds in both classical and popular musical styles. He has prepared the Lakeside Singers for performances with the CSO at the Ravinia Festival conducted by Eric Kunzel, John Axelrod and Ludwig Wicki.

He has appeared as guest conductor at with the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra and conducted chamber orchestra and 160 singers in a performance of the Mozart Vespers sponsored by the Northwest Music Academy. He has conducted the choral segments for the restoration of Orson Wells’ film version of “Othello”, along with segments from “My Best Friend’s Wedding” starring Julia Roberts.

Throughout his career he has been composing, recording and arranging for voices on a regular basis in both classical and nonclassical styles. His choral music is published by Boosey and Hawkes and Roger Dean publishing. Other recent choral commissions include the Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus, Emily Ellsworth, conductor, the Central Bucks High School-West Symphonic Chorale, Dr. Joseph Ohrt, conductor, and the Red Rose Children’s Choir of Lake County, Jacquelyn Negus and Sharon Augsburger, conductors. In addition to his choral music, he has composed music for numerous theater productions and twenty-nine contemporary Art Songs for voice and piano, along with a suite of three pieces for clarinet and piano.

He has recently produced recordings for the Lakeside Singers, and a cd of the choral works of composer Rollo Dilworth . He has also recently produced jazz and folk recordings for solo artists Andrew Distel and Jennifer Armstrong.
